Veteran highlife musician, Orlando Julius, dies at 79

Veteran highlife musician, Orlando Julius, has died at the age of 79.

His death was announced in the early hours of Friday.

The ‘A dara, a dara’ singer’s widow, Latoya, relayed the death announcement through music promoter, Bimbo Esho.

“Bimbo, Daddy Has Passed On….This was the message I stumbled on waking up at exactly 3 am to peruse my WhatsApp page. It was a message sent to me by Orlando Julius’ beautiful and supportive wife Lady Latoya.

“Orlando Julius, a native of Ijebu Ijesha, succumbed to the cold hands of death and breathed his last few hours ago at the age of 79.

“We shall miss one of Nigeria’s fathers of Afro/Highlife Music, a gentleman and a fine Saxophonist.

“May daddy Orlando Julius’ soul journey well. To the entire Ekemode family may God give you the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” Bimbo Esho posted.

The ‘Jagua Nana’ singer celebrated his 60 years on stage last year.

According to his Wiki profile, Julius was born in 1943 in Ikole, Nigeria to a merchant family during British colonialism. His first musical teacher was his mother, who would sing and dance while he played drums.

He went to St. Peter’s Anglican School in Ikole and played in the school band.

In 1957, after dropping out of school and the death of his father, he left for Ibadan to pursue a career as a musician. He worked at a bakery while playing the drums or flute with juju and konkoma bands. There was no music school in the area at the time, so the premier, Obafemi Awolowo, created one in his political party’s secretariat.

The music producer who was originally an artiste before pivoting into production to further develop his craft from inside out, now feels ready to express his artistry and story.
Renowned for his signature tagline, ‘Wi Wi Wi Willis Give Dem’, Yung Willis has always prioritized Giving back Value which is one of the inspirations behind one of the biggest producer taglines in the World. Having gained enough experience working with various artistes while  creating/honing various unique sounds & navigating through the entertainment industry.

The Abuja Native now feels ready to Give Back from that experience base through his newly launched Record Label; Royals Music Records.
According to him, “today marks the beginning of something groundbreaking for the future of Talents discovery, Artistes, Music Producers, Sound Engineers, Song Writers &  Creatives or Entertainment Professionals generally.
One person that always inspired me is Don Jazzy, with how he has shown through Mavin, that music can be structured by Nigerians at a global standard. Kanye west has also always been a big inspiration for me, both musically and entrepreneurally.”
He says further that “I’m still that young boy from Abuja, still learning and trying to navigate  through the entertainment industry but strongly believes in structure and I’m passionate about getting It right. I believe that it’s time for me to start small. With the launch of Royals Music, I can take the next phase in the evolution of my art & brand and by God’s grace, I can still Give Back to the creative society that has helped me thrive over the last few years.”
The launch comes just before the release of his debut single fittingly titled “Givin Dem” which is the first single off his upcoming album LOTP (Life of The Party). For this album, Yung Willis has partnered with the Mr Eazi powered international label, emPawa Africa. He is assured that what he has in store to Give Us  is set to “Blow our Minds” and everyone should be on the lookout. Given Dem is out this friday, June 10th, 2022. Yung Willis is really Givin Dem.

Star actor, Adebayo Salami, has appreciated God and his family on his 70th birthday.

The veteran took to his official Instagram account to celebrate his achievements with a picture.

He wrote: “At 70, life makes more meaning to me through the blessings of family and endearing legacies of my career. Alhamdulilahi for the grace of this day.”
